Very nice effect. Thanks again for a great tutorial!![]()
Allright guys, that’s the second tutorial to show you how I made my latest wallpaper:
Step 1:
As usual, start with a photo you like. Skipped the steps to turn it into a standard widescreen wallpaper.

Step 2:
Let’s prepare the background. Press ‘Ctrl + T’ and stretch the photo horizontally until it almos ¾ of the canvas. After that apply a motion blur (‘Filter’ -> ‘Blur’). Choose a value until it looks like this:
![]()
Add now a new layer and fill it with a white color. Go to ‘Filter’ -> ‘Render’ -> ‘Fibre’. You can leave the standard setting or choose your own. Hit ‘Ok’. As next add a motion blur to look it smooth. Use following settings:
- Degree: 90°
- Value: 350 – 400 (choose a value you like)
As next go to ‘Edit’ -> ‘Transform’ -> ‘Rotate 90° CW’. It should look now like this:
![]()
Set the blending mode to ‘Overlay’ and duplicate the layer. That’s the interim result:

To make a smooth transition between the portrait and the background you should enter the ‘Quick-Mask-Mode’. Mask the layer with a soft brush like in this screenshot:
After that leave the ‘Quick-Mask-Mode’ and go to the menu ‘Layer’ -> ‘Add Layer Mask’ -> ‘Vector Mask’. The final background looks now like this:

Step 3:
Ok, let’s finish this wallpaper. Put Avrils photo as top layer. Choose the eraser-tool with a soft brush. Use it to extract Avril:

Add a ‘Gradient Map’ (‘Layer’ -> ‘New Adjustment Layer’). Choose a black to white gradient:

Next add a ‘Solid Color’ (‘Layer’ -> ‘New Fill Layer’). Choose a color you like. I picked a blue one and set the blending mode to 'Overlay':

We’re not finished yet. Take a look at her, her hair is too bright and her face is too dark. Let’s fix it. Go to ‘Layer’ -> ‘New Adjustment Layer’ -> ‘Brightness/Contrast’. Do this for the hair and her face:

Step 4:
It’s time for the text to finish this thing. First write down the words you want to add. You can make it in one size, so you don’t have to choose different sizes during this process. After that you can transform the words with ‘Ctrl + T’ and set the final positions of the text.
To implement the text into the background you’ve to merge down the text-layers first. As next copy one of the ‘fibre’-layers (see step 2), set it as the top layer and set the blending mode to ‘Overlay’. Press ‘Ctrl + Alt +G’ to add a cut mask. The top layer will only be displayed on the text.
Merge down all other layers below the text-layer. Now make a custom selction with the ‘Magic Wand‘-tool:

Add another ‘Vector Mask’ to complete the effect:

So i have tried it out quickly, i am using CS 4 and i have a problem:
I don't have the option ‘Layer’ -> ‘Add Layer Mask’ -> ‘Vector Mask’
The only option i have is 'Layer' -> 'Vector Mask' -> 'Blend in'. So a window next to the layer appears in the layer view, but i don't know what to do then.
...and in this step:
Next add a ‘Solid Color’ (‘Layer’ -> ‘New Fill Layer’). Choose a color you like. I picked a blue one
i think it is necessary to set the blend option again on 'Overlay', otherwise you only see the full pic with the color![]()
